Advancements in cancer diagnostic testing
Overview
Medical research continues to advance cancer diagnostics through improved testing for colorectal, lung, and breast cancers.
A study from Örebro University involving 3,258 Swedish patients found that fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) are highly effective at identifying high-risk colorectal cancer patients. In lung cancer research, Tel Aviv University researchers developed a blood test using a DNA chip and optical reading to detect DNA methylation, achieving 93.1% sensitivity and 90.3% specificity for stage 2–4 lung cancers.
Liquid biopsy technology has seen significant progress. UCLA’s ‘MethylScan’ analyzes DNA methylation patterns to identify the tissue of origin, demonstrating 98% specificity. Complementing these developments, researchers at Karolinska Institutet are exploring multifeature sequencing-based liquid biopsy (MSLB) to combine multiple biological signals, such as cell-free DNA, for a more comprehensive tumor profile. In Spain, studies coordinated by the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre and the University of Navarra show that identifying tumor DNA fragments in the blood can detect multiple myeloma relapses, potentially anticipating progression before symptoms appear.
Other innovations include an experimental electrochemical dual immunosensor using MXene-based material to detect breast cancer biomarkers HER2 and MUC1 in 20 minutes. Additionally, scientists at Yonsei University discovered that specific oral bacteria can serve as indicators for stomach, colorectal, and intestinal cancers. At Malmö University, researchers have developed synthetic receptors to detect abnormal protein phosphorylation linked to cancer. Finally, Mexico’s National Institute of Genomic Medicine (Inmegen) is working to integrate liquid biopsy into clinical practice to improve cancer diagnosis and follow-up through precision medicine.
