Advancements in immunotherapy and regenerative medicine

Overview

Recent medical research has demonstrated progress in hematology and immunotherapy through various cellular and structural approaches.

In Switzerland, researchers at the University of Zurich identified a signaling pathway involving ‘activated protein C’ (aPC) that helps blood stem cells maintain their regenerative properties during laboratory processing. This discovery may improve the success of blood stem cell transplants.

Further developments in immunotherapy include research from Taiwan, where scientists found that exposing natural killer (NK) cells to interleukin-15 (IL-15) expands a subpopulation of cells with high cytotoxicity against leukemia. In animal models, this approach reduced tumor volume and improved the tumor microenvironment.

Additionally, researchers from Guangzhou Medical University developed a 3D-printed artificial lymph node using a hydrogel scaffold. Designed to treat multiple sclerosis, the device provides a protected niche for tolerogenic dendritic cells, which has shown the ability to promote regulatory T cell populations and suppress inflammatory B cells in mouse models.
