Advancements in multi-cancer blood test detection

Overview

Recent medical research and clinical developments have focused on improving early cancer detection through liquid biopsy technology.

A large-scale study known as PATHFINDER 2, published in Nature Medicine, demonstrated that a multi-cancer early detection (MCED) blood test can identify signals for 17 different cancer types. Analyzing DNA fragments in the bloodstream of over 32,000 participants, the study reported a specificity of 99.64% and a positive predictive value of 60.3%. Notably, 70.9% of confirmed cases were identified at stage 3 or earlier, and many detected cancers belonged to categories without current high-priority screening recommendations.

Building on the potential for blood-based screening, researchers at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center have launched a clinical trial for a specific liquid biopsy designed to detect breast cancer. This test aims to identify rare cancer-associated cells and tumor-associated large extracellular vesicles in the bloodstream to complement traditional mammography, potentially reducing patient anxiety and improving access for remote populations.
