Advancements in rechargeable battery longevity

Overview

Researchers are developing new methods to extend the lifespan and durability of rechargeable batteries, focusing on preventing structural degradation during charge-discharge cycles.

In South Korea, a POSTECH research team led by Professors Hong Ji-hyun and Park Kyu-young developed a strategy for Lithium-Excess Layered Oxide (LMRO) manganese-based cathodes. By precisely controlling oxygen release through charge depth, the team maintained 98.4% of initial energy after more than 200 cycles.

In the United States, researcher Mya Le Thai at the University of California, Irvine, developed a method using gold nanowires coated with manganese dioxide and an electrolyte gel. This approach demonstrated extreme durability, completing 200,000 cycles within three months without significant capacity loss, potentially extending the functional life of electronics and electric vehicles significantly.
