Advancements in respiratory disease research and treatment
Overview
Medical research and clinical developments are advancing the management of chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD. Recent studies have identified that the interaction between Aspergillus mold and specific bacterial molecules can trigger aggressive immune responses, contributing to steroid-resistant asthma in approximately 10 percent of patients. Additionally, the CHOROS ORION study indicated that triple inhalation therapy can reduce healthcare resource utilization over a 52-week period.
In Poland, while biological therapies have improved outcomes for severe asthma, significant gaps in access remain. It is estimated that while 6,000 patients receive reimbursed biological treatments, up to 35,000 may require them. Diagnostic challenges persist, with over half of asthma and COPD patients in the country remaining undiagnosed. To address this, free spirometry testing is being implemented across ten National Health Fund branches. New monoclonal antibodies like depemokimab, which targets the interleukin-5 pathway, offer potential breakthroughs due to their long-acting nature, requiring administration only once every six months.
