Advancements in solar-to-hydrogen production technology
Overview
Researchers are advancing technologies to enhance solar-to-hydrogen fuel production through the development of advanced photocatalysts.
At Oregon State University, a team led by Kyriakos Stylianou developed a metal-organic framework (MOF) named BVR-19. This material uses sulfur-containing organic building blocks and an unusual sulfide-to-sulfide bond that breaks when exposed to light to facilitate water splitting. This method aims to produce green hydrogen without relying on expensive metal catalysts, potentially lowering production costs compared to traditional natural gas methods.
In related research, the University of Córdoba investigated how metal coatings on titanium dioxide affect the efficiency of producing hydrogen from glycerol. While platinum and gold provided the strongest results, researchers identified copper as a promising, cost-effective alternative to prevent light-generated electrical charges from recombining too quickly.
