Recent medical research has demonstrated new methods for restoring motor function and sensation in individuals with spinal cord injuries. In the United States, researchers at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research utilized a hybrid brain-body interface (BBI) to help a paralyzed patient regain motor functions and sensation. By stimulating both the brain and the spinal cord, the system enabled the patient to perform delicate tasks, such as grasping fragile objects, with the sense of touch persisting even when devices were deactivated. In Italy, researchers from the MINE Lab—a collaboration between Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna—have advanced “trunk-mediated control” techniques. Published in the journal Med, this method utilizes commercially available spinal cord stimulators to allow individuals with chronic, complete spinal cord injuries to stand and walk. In a study involving four participants under the age of 35, the technique enabled patients to use voluntary trunk movements to modulate electrical stimulation, facilitating the transition from weight-bearing postures to coordinated walking steps. Following four months of intensive rehabilitation, all participants were able to walk using a walker without manual assistance or weight-support systems. One participant successfully walked 132 meters in 42 minutes, while three participants were able to stand while supporting themselves with only one hand. Researchers Pietro Mortini and Silvestro Micera noted that the technique leverages preserved bodily functions to allow patients to actively participate in the walking process. Beyond physical mobility, clinicians reported improvements in the patients' psychological well-being. Researchers intend to expand this protocol to non-traumatic injuries in the future.
