Developments in battery chemistry and service infrastructure are accelerating as manufacturers move toward industrial-scale validation and enhanced quality control. BYD continues to refine its solid-state technology, targeting a 400 Wh/kg 60 Ah pilot cell for 2027. BYD Senior Vice President Stella Li has confirmed that the company plans to launch its first electric vehicle equipped with solid-state technology in 2027. This initial rollout will serve primarily as a “technology validation and demonstration model” rather than a mass-market product. Utilizing sulfide-based chemistry, the technology aims for an energy density approximately double that of current second-generation Blade batteries, with prototypes already achieving 1,218 kilometers under the CLTC cycle. Due to high manufacturing costs, initial production is expected to be limited to a small series of approximately 1,000 vehicles, likely integrated into high-end brands such as Yangwang, with full-scale mass production projected for around 2030. At the IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, BYD expanded its commercial offerings by unveiling the ETT 44, an electric 4x2 heavy-duty tractor for the European market. The vehicle features a 651-kWh Blade battery with a 44-tonne payload capacity and a range of up to 600 kilometers. To facilitate long-haul logistics, it utilizes Megawatt Charging Standard (MCS) technology, enabling charging from 20% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes at speeds exceeding 1.5 MW. Additionally, the Chinese market saw an update to the 2027 BYD Yuan Pro (Atto 2), which now features a larger 51.13-kWh battery providing a 501 km CLTC range. In the premium segment, BYD’s sub-brand Denza is expanding its lineup. The Denza Z9S sedan is scheduled for a Chinese market debut in late September 2026, offering a range of up to 1,100 km under the CLTC cycle. Additionally, the Denza N8L large SUV will feature a 130.15 kWh Blade battery, providing up to 960 km of range and ultra-fast charging. Regionally, BYD is seeing rapid growth in Italy, where it aims to reach a car park of 100,000 units and become a top-five automotive brand by 2027. CATL is advancing toward a 2027 milestone for sulfide-based solid-state batteries while focusing on ‘Super-Hybrid’ technology. To mitigate quality risks, CATL is expanding its ‘Ning Service’ network to 100 cities globally by the second half of 2026, promoting a ‘precision repair’ model. CATL has also implemented a ‘1 PPB’ quality standard and utilizes an independent ‘Opponent Group’ to manage technical risks.
