Advances in quantum materials and superconductor control

Overview

Researchers have made progress in mapping quantum materials and controlling superconducting properties. An international collaboration mapped the electronic structures of 9,000 two-dimensional materials, identifying over 1,600 candidates for “twistronics,” a technique using material stacking and angling to unlock novel electronic behaviors.

Parallel developments have focused on the manipulation of quantum vortices in type II superconductors. Initial findings indicated that atomic-scale surface steps can act as guides, allowing superconducting vortices to move more than 1,000 times more easily along these steps than across them.

Subsequent research has detailed how these one-atom-high discontinuities can be used to manipulate the energy landscape, enabling the potential rectification of vortex motion. By controlling or anchoring Abrikosov vortices—which can cause energy dissipation and heat when they move under electrical current—scientists aim to improve the performance of superconductors for use in technologies such as maglev trains, particle accelerators, and medical equipment.
