The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, is confirmed for 19 June – 17 July 2027. This “Pamoja” edition is expected to attract over 1.5 million spectators and 3.2 billion viewers. Preparations are underway across the host nations. Kenya is upgrading Kasarani Stadium with a hybrid-grass pitch and planning railway expansions near Nyayo National Stadium. Tanzania is monitoring road construction around Arusha. Uganda is leveraging the event as a “once-in-a-generation” tourism platform, with authorities aiming to link football fans to wildlife and cultural attractions. Uganda’s Local Organising Committee has also launched a supplier pre-qualification exercise and a nationwide jersey design competition. However, the tournament faces logistical and governance hurdles. In Kenya, a Sports Disputes Tribunal has temporarily halted the appointment of certain Local Organising Committee members due to transparency and equity concerns. Additionally, veteran journalist Elias Makori resigned from the committee, citing unpaid fees and operational challenges. Regarding future tournaments, CAF has opened bidding for the 2028, 2032, and 2036 editions. The race for 2028 has intensified, with Ethiopia officially submitting its candidacy to compete against Morocco and a joint bid from South Africa and Botswana. Ethiopia seeks its first hosting duties since 1976, leveraging its large population and government support despite challenges regarding stadium infrastructure and regional security. For the 2032 edition, Guinea has expressed interest in a joint hosting proposal with Senegal to pool financial and organizational resources. Additionally, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—is advancing a joint bid to co-host the 2032 tournament, a collaborative effort intended to “strengthen regional cooperation” through a shared sporting project. As preparations for the 2027 tournament progress, a CAF delegation is currently conducting inspections in Kenya.
