AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund media controversies and political tensions
Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD’s top candidate for the Saxony-Anhalt state election, has become a focal point of media controversy and political tension. Following a confrontational exchange between ZDF reporter Fabian Köster and Siegmund, the reporter faced violent threats from supporters of the politician. This incident occurred after Köster questioned Siegmund on controversial party policies during a public appearance. Subsequent media scrutiny intensified after an interview Siegmund conducted with the children’s channel KiKA. In the interview, Siegmund discussed patriotism and suggested that Germans should not “always only feel ashamed of our history.” The student representative conducting the interview distanced herself from Siegmund’s positions, stating on social media that the responsibility for providing political context and historical framing lies with the broadcaster rather than the interviewer. Controversy escalated when Siegmund, co-leader of the AfD parliamentary group in Saxony-Anhalt, linked defense industry production to mass deportation plans. While discussing a potential Elbit Systems production site in Sangerhausen, Siegmund stated that arms production would require “appropriate auxiliary tools” for future “remigration” and deportation operations. Siegmund later attempted to clarify that his remarks referred to vehicles and equipment necessary for law enforcement and security institutions. He defended his stance as a “political responsibility” for the state to ensure capacity for deportation processes. However, political opponents from the SPD and Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) condemned the rhetoric. Katja Pähle (SPD) suggested the comments equate the use of military-grade equipment for mass expulsions to using violence as a political instrument, while Claudia Wittig (BSW) stated that deportation is not a military task and characterized the rhetoric as a provocation. Siegmund has since used social media to claim the media took a “half-sentence” out of context to create a negative portrayal of his views.
