On October 6, 2026, a massive fire erupted on the Liberian-flagged oil tanker Aframax Rio in the Black Sea near Sochi, Russia. The vessel, suspected to be part of the Russian ‘shadow fleet’ and previously sanctioned by Ukraine, was reportedly carrying between 95,000 and 105,000 tons of crude oil destined for India. The Russian Ministry of Transport reported that the tanker was attacked by unmanned surface vehicles, causing an explosion and an open oil fire. While the intensity of the blaze initially hindered firefighting, all 23 crew members, who are Indian nationals, were successfully evacuated without injury. The incident caused local disruption, with thick black smoke blanketing parts of Sochi. Authorities in the Sirius federal territory advised residents to keep windows closed closed, wear masks, and avoid outdoor activities, while local beaches were temporarily closed as officials monitored air and water quality. Although Russian officials attribute the incident to maritime drones, Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility.
