The 2026 Africa Netball Cup concluded in Nairobi with Uganda defeating South Africa 56-53 in the final to be crowned champions. While Uganda and South Africa had already secured spots for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney through global rankings, the tournament determined the remaining African qualifiers. Malawi and Namibia secured the final two African slots for the 2027 World Cup by reaching the semi-finals. Malawi claimed the bronze medal after defeating Namibia 50-45 in the third-place classification match. Netball Namibia’s qualification is recognized as a historic milestone for the nation’s sport development, particularly following the establishment of the MTC Namibia Netball Premiership six years ago. Supporters noted that the achievement reflects the dedication of players, coaches, and administrators, and is expected to increase the profile of women’s sports in Namibia on the international stage. Following the tournament, Netball Namibia president Juanita Witbeen credited the Desert Jewels’ qualification to stable financial backing from Debmarine Namibia, stating such resources are essential for international-level preparation. Witbeen noted the success is intended to inspire grassroots development and create pathways for young athletes. Individual honors were also highlighted for Namibian international Cornelia Mupenda, who was named Best Defender at the Africa Netball Cup. Mupenda also recently captained the University of Johannesburg to the 2026 Varsity Netball Championship title after defeating North-West University 56–44.
