An Ebola virus outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo strain, has expanded from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to several other African nations. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the epidemic has resulted in nearly 10,000 cases and approximately 4,600 deaths. The outbreak has spread to Kenya, where authorities confirmed nine cases and two deaths. Nigeria has since reported its first case in over a decade involving a 42-year-old female diplomat of Ugandan origin. On October 26, 2026, the patient, a Swiss citizen, was medically evacuated from Abuja to Switzerland via air ambulance alongside her asymptomatic husband. Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate reported that the patient’s condition has shown “remarkable improvement,” noting she is stable, conscious, and able to communicate, with laboratory results approaching baseline levels. While her condition has improved, officials cautioned she may still be infectious, necessitating strict medical protocols during the airlift from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The Africa CDC is deploying scientists to Abuja to investigate the infection source. Although initial reports suggested travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, travel documents indicate the patient did not visit the DRC. Investigators are exploring a potential link to a recent case in Kenya, as genetic sequencing revealed closely related viral strains; both patients reportedly passed through Entebbe International Airport in Uganda around the same time in early October. In response, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated its highest level of the National Incident Management System and is monitoring 52 contacts in Nigeria. Switzerland has assumed responsibility for the patient’s care and the monitoring of her husband, who is identified as the 53rd contact. The World Health Organization reports that Nigeria currently has no active Ebola cases following this evacuation.
