African immunization strategy and coverage efforts

Overview

African nations are working to accelerate the Continental Immunization Strategy (CIS) to address vaccination coverage that remains below pre-pandemic levels. Following a high-level meeting hosted by the Africa CDC in The Gambia, a West Africa Regional Roadmap was validated to increase coverage, reduce zero-dose populations, and improve supply chain resilience.

Challenges persist in West Africa, with countries such as Nigeria, Angola, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo accounting for more than half of the world’s priority zero-dose children. Experts have identified measles vaccination as a primary concern, citing vaccine hesitancy and weak data systems as contributing factors.

In response to these regional needs, Chad launched the 2026 African Vaccination Week in N’Djamena. The campaign, themed ‘For every generation, vaccines work’, focuses on raising awareness and encouraging catch-up vaccinations for children and pregnant women to protect against preventable diseases.
