African nations continue to advance regional initiatives regarding health policy, traditional medicine, and political stability. In the health sector, the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa convened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to define regional priorities and address challenges such as climate change and resource constraints. Ethiopia has expressed ambitions to transform Addis Ababa into a major African healthcare hub through specialized care and local pharmaceutical production. Economic discussions at the summit highlighted a critical financing gap; the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) reported that African governments fund less than 41% of total health expenditure on average, often spending more on debt servicing than on public health. In West Africa, Guinea-Bissau has become the first ECOWAS nation to host an engagement mission for its new Regional Community Health Policy, with the Gabú and Oio regions serving as pilot zones. To support this, the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) provided laboratory equipment valued at over 1.5 million euros to enhance epidemiological surveillance. Efforts to integrate traditional medicine are progressing, with Burkina Faso preparing for its 14th National Week of Traditional and Alternative Medicine in Manga. In Mali, the government is focusing on the 24th African Traditional Medicine Day, emphasizing scientific research into African pharmacopoeia to bolster health sovereignty. Additionally, Chad has reactivated its ‘Meeting of the 24’ to target 90% vaccination coverage by 2029. Regarding governance, Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema reaffirmed support for Guinea-Bissau’s political transition during a visit by transitional leader General Horta Inta A Na Man. Oligui Nguema offered to share institutional experiences to assist Guinea-Bissau’s return to constitutional order, specifically regarding upcoming milestones such as a constitutional referendum and the presidential election scheduled for December 6, 2026.
