African visa policy reforms and passport rankings

In July 2026 Zimbabwe announced a new visa‑on‑arrival scheme for citizens of nine African countries, offering single‑, double‑ and multiple‑entry options while keeping major economies such as Nigeria and South Africa under standard procedures. Botswana simultaneously expanded its visa‑free list to 15 African nations and retained broad visa‑exempt status for over 100 non‑African countries, citing tourism growth and streamlined border management.

Later that month a regional passport index ranked the Seychelles passport as the most powerful African travel document, granting visa‑free or visa‑on‑arrival access to 114 destinations. Mauritius and South Africa followed, while the median African passport provided access to 47 destinations. The report highlighted the increasing impact of electronic visas, which add an average of 41 destinations to a passport’s reach, underscoring a broader trend toward greater mobility within and beyond Africa.

Together, the policy adjustments by Zimbabwe and Botswana and the emerging passport rankings illustrate a continent‑wide shift toward liberalised entry arrangements and enhanced travel freedom, driven by tourism objectives and the growth of e‑visa systems.
