On August 7, a 51-year-old Romanian monk was arrested following an attack at the Agios Neophytos monastery in the Paphos district of Cyprus. The incident, involving the use of a box cutter, resulted in injuries to a 53-year-old monastery technician, who sustained wounds to his throat and hand, and a 27-year-old novice monk who was injured while attempting to intervene. Both victims were treated at the Paphos General Hospital. Hospital; the technician required hospitalization and stitches, while the younger monk was released after receiving first aid. The confrontation reportedly occurred when a delegation of church officials, including Abbot Leontios, requested that the monk vacate his cell and return the keys. The monk, who had been suspended from clerical duties and had been in disagreement with leadership for several years, allegedly became enraged. Investigators believe the monk may have intended to target the Abbot. The monastery clarified that the conflict originated from a dispute over a specific room that the monk had occupied for approximately four years, following his father's 20-year residency in the same space. The monk allegedly refused to vacate the room after a morning service. Cyprus Police have placed the individual in six-day detention and charged him with attempted murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, causing serious bodily harm, and illegal possession of a weapon. The Paphos Criminal Investigation Department is continuing its inquiry, and the monastery is cooperating with dozens of additional statements expected as part of the ongoing investigation.
