Agricultural and food security challenges in Uganda

Overview

Uganda’s agricultural sector has faced consecutive challenges involving climate conditions and supply chain disruptions. Initially, a prolonged dry spell threatened crop yields, particularly beans, and caused sharp increases in the prices of staples such as maize, groundnuts, and millet in regions like Arua City.

This situation was compounded by severe fertilizer shortages and rising costs. In Uganda, regional instability in the Persian Gulf, specifically involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, disrupted the trade of raw materials for nitrogen-based and phosphate fertilizers. This led to significant price hikes, with urea reaching approximately Shs220,000 per 50kg bag.
