Agricultural labor exploitation investigations in Italy

Overview

Italian authorities have conducted separate investigations into agricultural labor exploitation rings in Siena and Sicily.

In Val di Merse, Siena, an investigation into ‘caporalato’ led to the seizure of an agricultural company. Three managers face investigation for labor exploitation, serious culpable injuries, and ideological falsehood. Reports indicate a non-EU worker was allegedly forced to work 62 hours per week for approximately 800 euros per month while living in a dilapidated, uninhabitable building. Investigators also allege that two workplace accidents were intentionally misrepresented to evade inspections.

In Sicily, specifically the areas of Regalbuto and Enna, authorities uncovered a ring targeting Moroccan farmworkers. Workers were allegedly forced to work up to 70 hours per week without contracts, earning as little as one euro per crate of oranges. The workers were reportedly housed in buildings lacking water and electricity, with accommodation costs deducted from their pay. Four Romanian nationals suspected of managing the network face precautionary measures, including house arrest and police reporting requirements.
