Developments in agricultural technology are focusing on improving nitrogen efficiency and managing environmental impacts. Solutions like Bactériosol and Bactériolit utilize microorganisms to promote soil humification, which increases soil organic matter to improve water retention and nutrient availability. Monitoring tools, such as TriSCAN capacity probes, are being employed to track mineral salt and water flows at various soil depths. Recent research led by Dr. Garima Lakhanpal in Ireland, supported by Teagasc and the University of Waterloo, has examined nitrogen dynamics in intensive dairy systems. The study suggests that combining restricted-duration grazing with reduced inorganic and organic nitrogen inputs can reduce nitrogen leaching by 40 per cent and ammonia losses by 24 per cent. In Canada, autonomous technology is being trialed to optimize nutrient application. Farmers are testing small, liquid nitrogen microdosing applicators developed by Upside Robotics. These robotic implements travel through corn rows to dispense liquid UAN throughout the growing season, aiming to improve profitability through precision application.
