Agricultural productivity and profit challenges in Vietnam

Overview

Agricultural producers in Vietnam are facing significant economic and biological challenges. In late July, farmers in Hà Tĩnh province reported a collapse in black plum harvests due to severe storms, with one grower noting profits fell from 80 million VND to 10 million VND. Simultaneously, rice farmers in Đồng Tháp province reported that while yields remained stable, rising costs for fuel, labor, and materials squeezed profits to approximately 8 million VND per hectare.

By late August, the situation for rice farmers in the Mekong Delta intensified. Reports from areas such as Ha Huy Tap ward indicated widespread issues with underdeveloped or empty grains, particularly in varieties like Khang Dan 18, raising fears of total crop loss. Across provinces including An Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, and Can Tho, the combination of high input costs for seeds, fertilizer, and pesticides, alongside weather-related yield reductions, has led to eroding profit margins and net losses for some land renters.
