In manufacturing, the industrial robotics market is accelerating toward ‘robot intelligence’—incorporating reasoning and autonomous decision-making—to combat labor shortages. This shift moves the industry from pre-programmed automation toward machines that can recognize environments and optimize movements. The Japanese government is supporting this via the GENIAC project, led by METI and NEDO, to develop robotics foundation models and AI applications for manufacturing data. This evolution is increasingly driven by the integration of AI, machine vision, and edge computing to handle complex, small-lot production tasks.
