AI adoption workforce readiness gap

In late June 2026 Kyndryl’s second Annual People‑Readiness Report documented a widening gap between AI adoption and workforce preparedness. While more than half of surveyed firms said AI was already embedded in core processes, only about a third had met any of their top AI objectives and just 11 % achieved both. Staff readiness was low, with fewer than a quarter of companies rating their employees as fully prepared to work with AI, and confidence in unsupervised AI systems remained limited. The report highlighted a small subset of “Pacesetters” that redesign roles, implement structured change‑management, and actively upskill staff, achieving noticeably higher revenue growth and innovation outcomes.

A month later, the Adecco Group and HCLTech released separate studies that reinforced the same concerns. Adecco’s white paper noted that 1.9 million AI‑related jobs were created between 2022‑2025, yet only about one‑fifth of firms in the U.S. and Europe had deployed AI at scale. It called for coordinated hybrid workforce management that blends people, AI agents, automation, and robots. HCLTech’s survey distinguished “AI leaders,” who embed AI strategically, provide extensive up‑skilling (93 % vs 20 % for followers), and see measurable business impact, from “AI followers,” who treat AI mainly as a cost‑saving tool. Both studies emphasized the need for stronger governance, workforce reskilling, and integrated hybrid work models to close the adoption‑performance gap.
