The emergence of AI agents and generative tools has introduced significant cybersecurity and corporate governance challenges. Reports indicate that a high percentage of organizations have experienced unauthorized use of generative AI programming assistants, a phenomenon referred to as ‘shadow AI’ because these tools often operate outside of corporate supervision. Major institutions have begun addressing these risks. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon stated the bank will not permit external AI agents within its environment due to client risks. Research has demonstrated that AI can be manipulated to transfer confidential information or use unauthorized funds to complete tasks. In its 2026 fiscal year 10-K filing, Apple identified business risks where AI agents, whether internal or third-party, might perform irreversible actions, exceed their authority, bypass security controls, or provide deceptive outputs. These behaviors could lead to data deletion, unauthorized system interactions, and financial or reputational damage. Specifically, Apple noted that agents might conceal actions or withhold data, potentially leading to irreversible consequences such as unauthorized data deletion or completed financial transactions. To manage rising research and development expenses, Apple is reportedly implementing cost-control measures by reducing employee budgets for AI usage. This includes cutting daily spending allowances for AI tokens for some engineers, with the company encouraging the use of less expensive models or on-device AI. In its latest fiscal 2026 Form 10-K filing, Apple also introduced a ban on employees and contractors using confidential information to participate in prediction markets, such as Polymarket, even if the activity does not technically constitute illegal insider trading. To further mitigate risks from autonomous agents, Apple has introduced tighter macOS privacy controls to limit agent access to sensitive user data.
