Huawei unveiled ‘Intelligent RAIL 2.0’, a suite of solutions designed to accelerate global railway intelligence. This launch involved major organizations such as the International Union of Railways (UIC) and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP). Industry discussions at the event centered on the necessity of transitioning from GSM-R to the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) and integrating AI into core rail systems for predictive maintenance and improved operational efficiency. Additionally, research indicates that AI is being actively deployed in metro construction, operations, and maintenance to improve efficiency. In a parallel regulatory development in Germany, the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has proposed classifying the mobile antenna access network as critical infrastructure. Developed with the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection, this proposal establishes a legal basis for a potential ban on Huawei technology within Germany’s 5G network. By expanding critical infrastructure status to include masts and transmission facilities, the state could mandate the removal of Huawei equipment from thousands of antennas used by providers such as Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefónica.
