AI and robotics impact on US labor market

Overview

Research and internal polling regarding the impact of artificial intelligence and robotics on the United States labor market have highlighted a significant gap between technical capability and economic reality. An Anthropic study found that while robots can perform 74% of physical tasks, they are currently cost-competitive with human workers for only 0.3% of tasks. In contrast to these current economic limitations, internal projections from Anthropic employees suggest a rapid acceleration of automation. An internal poll revealed that more than half of staff members believe AI will be able to perform at least 80% of their current job functions by 2030. This perspective differs sharply from the general American public, where only approximately 5% to 28% of surveyed workers shared such views. Furthermore, Anthropic staff predict US unemployment could exceed 12% by 2030, while the general public forecasts a rate closer to 8%.

By late 2026, internal data confirmed a fundamental restructuring of the workforce. Total AI agent work hours first surpassed human employee hours in March 2026, with interactive agent hours reaching six times the human workload by August. This shift has increased engineer code submissions fivefold but has also created a ‘productivity bottleneck’ as human attention is increasingly diverted to ‘meta-work’—the management, monitoring, and coordination of AI outputs.

This transition has significantly impacted hiring patterns. The proportion of junior technical hires at Anthropic fell from 27% to 9%, and the share of junior employees within the technical department dropped from 21% to 14%. Consequently, hiring criteria are shifting away from technical execution toward autonomy and judgment. To address safety concerns during this transition, Anthropic granted six experts from the non-profit METR access to internal systems to independently audit Claude models.

Claims

What the coverage asserts, and how many sources carry each claim.

Coverage disagrees

Sources make claims that cannot both be true. CLSTR reports the disagreement; it does not decide who is right.

  • "More than half of Anthropic employees expect AI to handle at least 80% of their current work by 2030."

    vs

"Anthropic employees expect AI to handle 75% of their work on average by 2030."

The claims provide different specific metrics for the amount of work employees expect AI to handle by 2030 (more than 80% of current work vs. an average of 75%).

  • "The proportion of junior hires in technical roles at Anthropic fell from 27% to 9%." unwire.pro · www.itmedia.co.jp · technews.tw · www.watch.impress.co.jp · www.24matins.fr

    vs

"The proportion of junior technical hires at Anthropic fell from 27% to 9% since early 2025."

The first claim asserts a general drop in junior technical hires, while the second claim specifies this drop occurred since early 2025.
