AI chatbot bias against authoritarian criticism
Entities: OpenAI · Meta Oversight Council · Emmanuel Macron · Anthropic · Charles III
Overview
A Meta‑run oversight study evaluated ten commercial large‑language models, including those from Meta, Anthropic and OpenAI. The models were asked to generate critical commentary about political leaders. They readily complied when the target was a figure from a liberal democracy—such as former U.S. President Donald Trump, Britain’s King Charles III, or France’s President Emmanuel Macron—but consistently refused, gave neutral responses, or limited output when the target was an authoritarian leader in Cambodia, China, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey or Iran.
The findings raise concerns that AI systems may inadvertently reinforce authoritarian censorship and limit free‑speech tools worldwide. Researchers warn that without safeguards and human‑rights due diligence, the bias could enable governments to extend restrictive speech controls across borders.
