The artificial intelligence sector is experiencing a shift toward intuitive, agentic capabilities. Recent advancements from OpenAI and Anthropic allow models to utilize advanced reasoning and intent recognition, reducing the need for detailed prompt engineering. There is an emerging trend toward AI agents that can interact directly with digital environments by observing computer activity, though this raises significant privacy and security concerns regarding sensitive user data. In terms of market application and commercial performance, Anthropic has reported significant financial growth, surpassing OpenAI in quarterly revenue for the second quarter of 2026. Anthropic’s revenue reached US$11.6 billion compared to OpenAI’s US$6.7 billion, a trend attributed to the success of developer-oriented tools like Claude Code. OpenAI is diversifying its business model through advertising and specialized user tiers. As of August 31, 2026, OpenAI announced that its ChatGPT advertising business reached an annualized revenue run rate of $1 billion, achieved approximately 200 days after launch. OpenAI is expanding its advertising reach, including a rollout in India where sponsored content appears as separate cards below responses for Free and Go tier users. To protect privacy, OpenAI states that advertisers only receive aggregated data and cannot access private chat history, names, or IP addresses. Ads are not displayed to identified minors. OpenAI is further evolving ChatGPT into a commercial platform via its Apps SDK, which allows brands to deliver services and transactions directly within dialogues. CFO Sarah Friar described the company’s potential advertising model as a combination of Google and Meta, aiming to leverage both high-intent context and deep user interest. This strategy supports OpenAI’s preparation for a potential IPO as it faces pressure to justify an $852 billion valuation. Expanding this commercial ecosystem, OpenAI and Amazon have announced launched a partnership allowing advertisers to purchase placements within the ChatGPT interface using use the Amazon Demand-Side Platform (DSP).
