Discussions regarding the evolution of photography have centered on the transition from traditional dark-room techniques to digital standards like Photoshop. Expert Christoph Künne has characterized artificial intelligence as a new instrument for expanding creative possibilities rather than a threat, advising photographers to remain adaptable as algorithms handle routine tasks. Following these industry perspectives, Adobe has implemented technical advancements to integrate generative AI more deeply into the Photoshop workflow. Recent updates include the introduction of a beta workspace called the ‘AI Assisted Editor,’ which provides a simplified, prompt-based interface for complex tasks via natural language commands. This optional interface sits alongside the traditional Pro Editor, allowing users to perform tasks such as background removal, image expansion, and object removal via a prompt bar. Key features within this ecosystem include ‘Prompt to Edit’ for whole-image transformations, ‘Generative Fill’ for content manipulation, and ‘Generative Expand’ to extend image dimensions. To enhance precision, Adobe introduced ‘AI Markup,’ allowing users to visually communicate edits through sketches or markings directly on the image. Furthermore, the ‘Instruct Edit with Masks’ feature, powered by the Firefly Image 5 model, enables users to describe specific changes within selected areas while preserving the rest of the image. To support professional workflows, Adobe is also adding a non-destructive ‘Light Adjustment Layer.’ This tool integrates professional-grade lighting controls—such as exposure, contrast, highlights, and shadows—directly into the Photoshop layer workflow, mirroring capabilities found in Camera Raw. Notably, the software has expanded its ecosystem to support a wider range of AI models, including Google Gemini Gemini, FLUX 2 Pro, and FLUX, GPT Image 2, alongside Adobe’s proprietary Firefly technology.
