AI integration in Milan's industry and urban planning digital challenges in Milan
Milan is increasingly integrating artificial intelligence across various sectors, moving from industry-specific applications to broader urban development strategies. Initial developments show AI influencing the fashion industry during Milan Fashion Week, where brands use data analysis and generative tools to create virtual models and reduce fabric waste. Simultaneously, the technology sector is transitioning from experimental prototypes to production-ready systems, focusing on the practical implementation of Large Language Models (LLMs) and generative AI within enterprise frameworks. This technological integration is expanding into the civic sphere through initiatives like Milano Digital Week. The city is exploring the concept ninth edition of a ‘generative city,’ utilizing AI as a tool the event, themed ‘The Generative City’, focuses on using technology to enhance public services, administrative efficiency, create shared value and smart mobility, while leveraging Milan’s position foster connections rather than treating it as an end in itself. The city aims to leverage its status as an innovation hub to drive model smart mobility and data-driven sustainability. However, the rapid digital expansion has highlighted structural challenges. The digital market in the Milan metropolitan area is valued at 15.5 billion euros, with a projected growth of 4.7% this year. Despite this, research from Assolombarda indicates a significant skills gap; in 2025, over 45.6% of personnel sought by local companies were difficult to find, rising above 54% for technical profiles. To combat this, a three-year agreement with nine regional universities has been established to enhance specialized training. Furthermore, experts have identified an ‘AI divide’ between large corporations and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), leading to the creation of a new observatory to help SMEs navigate AI adoption.
