AI integration in Portuguese healthcare

Overview

In Portugal, artificial intelligence is being increasingly applied to healthcare innovation and clinical support. The SNS 24 symptom triage project, developed by SPMS, received the ‘Health’ subcategory award at the ‘Excellence in Data & AI 2026’ awards after assisting in more than 185,000 clinical triages during the year.

Further advancements include research from the University of Porto’s Faculty of Engineering (FEUP), which was recognized by the Ordem dos Engenheiros – Região Norte. This research employs AI and advanced image processing to evaluate malignant wounds in advanced cancer patients by converting visible and thermographic images into quantitative data to assist in palliative care assessments.
