AI retinal imaging for atherosclerosis detection
Overview
The Infanta Leonor University Hospital in Madrid has released results from the ‘Aitheroscope’ project, an initiative developed in collaboration with Horus ML to identify subclinical atherosclerosis using artificial intelligence and retinal imaging.
The technology analyzes fundus images of the eye to detect patterns in retinal vessels that are not visible to the human eye. Dr. Juan Torres Macho, head of Internal Medicine at the hospital, stated that the eye serves as a “direct and non-invasive window to analyze the state of the body’s vessels.”
A study published in the European Heart Journal – Digital Health involving 931 individuals with no prior cardiovascular history found that 50.8% of participants presented with subclinical atherosclerosis. The AI tool demonstrated a 93.4% diagnostic capability in identifying the condition, aiming to detect arterial disease before clinical symptoms like heart attacks or strokes manifest.
