Airbnb is implementing new global policies to restrict the cleaning tasks hosts can require from guests during checkout. Effective for reservations made on or after November 20, 2026, the guidelines prohibit mandatory tasks that require significant “significant effort or time” or are typically handled by professional staff, such as washing and putting away dishes, stripping beds, starting laundry, or transporting trash off-site. Permitted requests are limited to lighter tasks, such as placing used dishes in the sink, gathering towels, or sorting recycling into designated indoor bins. To improve transparency, Airbnb is standardizing house rules into seven clear categories—including occupancy limits, quiet hours, pets, smoking, and key return procedures—that must be displayed before booking is confirmed. This prevents hosts from introducing unexpected requirements via messages or physical signs after a reservation is made. The policy also prohibits hosts from imposing fines or penalties regarding these tasks. Reaction to the announcement has been polarized. While many travelers have welcomed the move, citing frustration over paying cleaning fees while still being required to perform manual labor, some hosts have expressed significant opposition. Critics argue the changes infringe on property control and may lead to increased cleaning fees. A Change.org petition regarding restrictions on dishwashing has gathered over 11,000 signatures, and some hosts have threatened to leave the platform or call for a boycott due to concerns over increased workloads and potential liability issues.
