Airstrikes off the Puntland coast

Overview

Following the August 17 hijacking of the Cameroon-flagged cargo ship M/V Lutuf by Somali pirates, a series of deadly airstrikes occurred along the Puntland coast in Somalia. The vessel was reportedly carrying Turkish-supplied weapons and communications equipment intended for a military training center in Mogadishu.

Two specific incidents were reported. An August 18 strike near Garmaal killed four people and injured two. While some reports suggested the targets were linked to hijackers, local residents and Puntland officials identified the victims as civilian fishermen. A second strike on August 23 near Jiifle reportedly killed at least nine people when a missile hit a small boat.

Puntland authorities have accused Türkiye and the Somali federal government of conducting the strikes, noting Turkish military activity in the vicinity. While no government has officially claimed responsibility, reports indicated Turkish naval and aerial assets were operating near the hijacked vessel. The Turkish Foreign Ministry stated it had “no information” regarding the operations.
