Airway fish bone foreign body incidents in Vietnam

Overview

Medical professionals in Ho Chi Minh City have successfully treated two separate cases involving fish bones lodged in patients' airways.

In the first instance, a three-year-old boy was treated at Children’s Hospital No. 1 after a month-long cough led to the discovery of an eel-bone fragment in his left lower-lobe bronchus. Doctors used flexible bronchoscopy to extract the bone and prevent the need for open-chest surgery.

In a subsequent case, doctors at the Ho Chi Minh City Otolaryngology Hospital removed a T-shaped fish bone from the trachea of a 48-year-old woman. The patient had experienced intense coughing fits, and imaging revealed a bone measuring approximately 1.5 x 2cm. Following an endoscopic procedure, the patient was treated for minor mucosal scratches and discharged.

In both cases, medical staff warned that failure to promptly treat airway foreign bodies can lead to life-threatening complications such as pneumonia, abscesses, or irreversible lung damage.
