Hajduk Split defeated Ajax 2-1 in their UEFA Conference League opener at Poljud Stadium, with goals from Bamba and Šotiček. While the victory marked Hajduk’s first major European win in 16 years, the achievement was overshadowed by extremist behavior, violence, and internal fan protests. During a pre-match march, members of the Torcida fan group were recorded shouting antisemitic and Nazi-related slogans, including references to ‘Auschwitz’ and ‘Adolf’, as well as ‘Gazi Židove’ (Kill the Jews) and ‘Ustaj, Adolfe’ (Rise, Adolf). Supporters also carried a coffin inscribed with ‘Ajax’. These incidents drew international condemnation from media in Israel, the Netherlands, and Poland, as well as from the Israeli Embassy in Zagreb. The Croatian Government, President Zoran Milanović, and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković described the actions as the “unacceptable glorification of fascism.” Hajduk Split and the Croatian Football Federation have issued apologies to both Ajax and UEFA. Law enforcement investigations have expanded, with twenty-three members of the Torcida implicated in the incidents. ~~Currently, six~~ Recent police findings reveal that these 23 identified suspects ~~are in custody~~ possess significant criminal histories, with combined records totaling over 200 criminal offenses and ~~two others are undergoing interrogation, while 15~~ 400 misdemeanors, including theft, drug abuse, weapons offenses, and violent crimes.
