The political landscape in Alagoas is undergoing significant shifts as candidates finalize registrations for the 2026 elections. João Henrique Caldas (JHC) has officially confirmed his candidacy for the governorship of Alagoas, selecting Célia Rocha as his running mate. JHC faces a highly competitive race against Renan Filho, who has selected Yale Fernandes as his vice-gubernatorial candidate. Renan Filho has confirmed his candidacy by drawing on his previous experience as governor and his recent tenure as Minister of Transport. While earlier polls suggested the candidates were closely matched, recent data indicates JHC has gained a significant lead. According to Instituto Índice Inteligência, JHC holds 47.6% of intended votes compared to 35.6% for Renan Filho. However, a more recent AtlasIntel poll conducted in early September 2026 shows the race tightening into a technical tie. In that survey, JHC (PSD) leads with 49.3% of voting intentions, while Renan Filho (MDB) follows with 46.4%. In a simulated second round, JHC maintains a slight lead of 49.9% against Renan Filho’s 46.7%. New polling data from Paraná Pesquisas reinforces this competitive environment. For the governorship, JHC leads with 48.6% of stimulated votes, followed by Renan Filho at 41.6%. In a simulated second round, JHC maintains a lead of 49.6% against Renan Filho’s 43.2%. In the Senate race, Arthur Lira has registered his candidacy alongside Marina Candia (PSDB). The Senate slate has recently seen a change following the withdrawal of Vice-Governor Ronaldo Lessa. Lessa stated that a previous agreement with JHC was not honored regarding his position on the slate. JHC cited “potential legal insecurity” for Candia’s candidacy as the reason for not proceeding with the expected swap. Following these developments, Ronaldo Lessa has officially resigned as Vice-Governor of Alagoas.
