While Saprissa maintained their position at the top of the Apertura 2026 standings, their subsequent 2-2 draw against Cartaginés was marked by comments from midfielder David Guzmán. Guzmán criticized Alajuelense supporters, contrasting them with the Saprissa fanbase, which he claimed provides constant support and demands the excellence necessary to compete for top positions. Alajuelense continues to face significant internal and external pressure following their Clásico defeat. The loss triggered fan protests, including the display of banners demanding leadership changes at the club’s High Performance Center. Addressing the discontent, Alajuelense sporting manager Carlos Vela stated that the club understands the frustration of the fans. Alajuelense took an early lead in the second minute through Anthony Hernández, but Marathón responded with a free kick goal by Yairo Moreno in the 10th minute. After Damín Ramírez put the Honduran side ahead 2-1 in the 50th minute, Alajuelense secured a late equalizer via Ángel Zaldívar in the 85th minute. The draw leaves the series open ahead of the second leg in Costa Rica on September 17, 2026.
