Alan Cleland Jr. sexual abuse allegations

Overview

The World Surf League (WSL) has provisionally suspended Mexican professional surfer and Olympic competitor Alan Cleland Jr. following allegations of sexual, physical, and verbal abuse.

Reports indicate that Cleland’s former partner, German surfer Noah Klapp, publicly accused him of abuse that occurred approximately six years ago when she was 17 years old. The incidents reportedly took place in French Polynesia following the Tahiti Pro in August. While the WSL stated the gathering where the alleged incident occurred was not affiliated with the organization, it took disciplinary action citing its code of conduct and a ‘zero tolerance’ policy regarding athlete behavior.

Cleland has been removed from the WSL Championship Tour rankings, and his sponsor, Quicksilver, has removed him from its website. While New South Wales Police have been informed of allegations involving a teenage girl from Australia, it remains unconfirmed whether French Polynesian police have launched a formal criminal investigation. Cleland has not yet issued a public response.
