Albania Sazan Island environmental protests

The ‘Flamingo Revolution’ is an environmental protest movement in Albania opposing the transfer of protected coastal areas to luxury tourism developments. The movement specifically targets Sazan Island, a former military base and critical nesting site for pink flamingos and migratory species, which is being sold to Affinity Partners for a $1.4 billion resort project following a 2025 law allowing construction in sensitive zones.

In August 2026, the Global Sumud Flotilla, organized by the collectives Mesdhe and Palestina e Lire, launched a mission from Brindisi, Italy, to support the protests. The delegation, comprising Italian activists, environmentalists, journalists, and descendants of 1991 Albanian emigrants, traveled toward Vlorë with three vessels. Some observers noted the flotilla’s attempt to link local environmental concerns to international narratives involving Palestine and Gaza to increase global media visibility.

On August 21, 2026, the three vessels arrived at the port of Vlorë and Sazan Island. Protesters have highlighted that the development, which may be valued between 1.4 and 5 billion euros, is linked to Affinity Partners, an investment fund associated with Jared Kushner. The movement has expanded from environmental advocacy into a broader political mobilization in Tirana, with participants questioning government corruption and the influence of foreign capital on national sovereignty. The flotilla’s arrival is noted for its symbolic connection to the 1991 voyage of the ship Vlora, which carried emigrants fleeing the communist regime.
