Albanian military vehicle production controversy

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the production of 40 military vehicles through a partnership between the state-owned company Kayo and the private firm Timak Defence. Rama stated, “Makinat janë të standardeve të NATO-s dhe po, janë prodhuar në Shqipëri!” to emphasize that the vehicles meet NATO standards and are manufactured domestically. However, initial reports noted a modest payroll for Timak Defence, which employed 14 workers with a five-month payroll totaling approximately €61,000.

Following these claims, scrutiny has emerged regarding a 9.6 million euro contract awarded by the Albanian Ministry of the Interior to Timak Defence for vehicles intended for the National Inspectorate of Territorial Protection (IKMT). Critics have questioned the transparency of the procurement process and the true nature of the manufacturing, suggesting the company may be assembling superstructures onto existing international chassis, such as MAN trucks or Toyota Land Cruisers, rather than conducting full domestic production. Additionally, reports have highlighted potential documentation irregularities, including an invoice allegedly signed on August 8, prior to the official contract dates.
