Albemarle lithium mining operations in Chile
Overview
Albemarle Corporation has faced both technological recognition and legal penalties regarding its lithium operations in Chile’s Salar de Atacama.
On one hand, the company received the 2025 Technological Contribution Prize from the Asociación de Industriales de Antofagasta (AIA). This award recognizes the development and validation of its Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology. A pilot plant in La Negra, representing a US$30 million investment, successfully operated for over 3,000 hours in 2025, achieving a lithium recovery rate exceeding 94% while improving water and energy efficiency.
Conversely, the company’s environmental practices have faced judicial scrutiny. The Chilean First Environmental Court has upheld a fine of approximately 4 billion pesos (roughly US$4.18 million) imposed by the Superintendency of the Environment (SMA) for infractions occurring between 2019 and 2021.
The court confirmed that Albemarle exceeded its authorized annual extraction limit, pumping an average of 452.3 liters per second against a permitted limit of 442 liters per second, resulting in the extraction of over 324,000 cubic meters of brine above the allowed volume. Additionally, the company failed to comply with its Early Warning Plan; after an environmental alert was triggered in February 2021, Albemarle did not reduce pumping until April, leading to an additional over-extraction of approximately 639,517 cubic meters during that period. Authorities noted that strict control is vital to maintaining the hydrological balance of the sensitive Salar de Atacama ecosystem.
