Alcalá de Henares held a series of cultural and religious celebrations throughout late July and August 2026. In late July, the Cofradía of Saints Justa and Rufina held an annual mass to honor the patrons of pottery, an event that included the passing of leadership symbols to new leadership. This was followed by the scheduled patron saint festivities for the Santos Niños Justo and Pastor, which included religious ceremonies, processions, and various community activities such as concerts and tournaments. By late August, the city launched its 2026 Ferias y Fiestas, a nine-day program running from August 22 to August 30. Featuring over 350 activities across the city and its districts, the festivities commenced with traditional ceremonies, including the procession of the Pendón de las Peñas accompanied by the Comparsa de Gigantes y Cabezudos and the Charanga La Complutense, followed by a floral offering to the Cristo de las ~~Peñas.~~ Peñas at the Convento de las Carmelitas Descalzas. A notable highlight of the opening was an official proclamation by APHISA, the Association of Alcalá de Henares for Intellectual Disability, to mark the organization’s 50th anniversary. Mayor Judith Piquet noted that this is the final festival of her current term, expressing a desire for a celebration characterized by joy and safety. To manage the high volume of visitors, the city implemented a security operation involving approximately 1,200 agents, supported by drones and surveillance cameras to ensure public safety and rapid response capabilities. The musical program includes DJ sessions in the Peñas tents and major concerts at venues such as La Plaza de Cervantes, featuring diverse genres including Bachatta, Pop-Rock, and Indie.
