Scientific research continues to examine the relationship between alcohol consumption and various health outcomes, including mortality and cancer risks. A study of over 340,000 British adults analyzed between 2006 and 2022 suggests that the type of alcohol consumed influences mortality risks. While heavy drinkers face significantly higher risks—including a 24% increase in overall mortality, a 36% increase in cancer risk, and a 14% increase in heart disease risk—results for low to moderate consumers vary by beverage. Moderate wine consumption was associated with a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular death, potentially due to polyphenols and antioxidants. Conversely, even low consumption of spirits, cider, or beer was linked to a 9% higher risk of cardiovascular death. Recent data published in ‘The Lancet Regional Health – Americas’ highlights a sharp rise in alcohol-attributable cancer deaths in the United States. Between 1990 and 2023, annual deaths more than doubled, rising from approximately 11,361 to 23,126. Researchers from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine found that for adults aged 20 to 54, colorectal cancer was the leading cause of alcohol-related death in men, while breast cancer was the primary cause in women.
