Alcohol consumption and public health in Spain

Public health discussions regarding alcohol consumption in Spain have highlighted contrasting trends between youth demographics and the general adult population.

Recent data indicates a significant decline in habitual alcohol use among Spanish youth, with the percentage of 15- to 24-year-olds who drink regularly dropping from 43.8% in 2006 to 17.9%. Despite this trend, health advocates note that non-drinkers still face social pressure in nightlife environments. In response to broader health risks, the World Health Organization has recommended that the European Union increase alcohol taxes and restrict advertising to prevent cancer cases.

Simultaneously, medical specialists are warning of high daily consumption rates among adults. Approximately 13% of adults in Spain consume alcohol daily, making the country the second-highest daily consumer in the European Union. Experts warn that the normalization of social drinking can lead to silent liver damage, such as cirrhosis, which often remains undetected until advanced symptoms like jaundice or cognitive impairment appear.
