Aldi has initiated several strategic retail activities across its international markets. In the United States, the company launched its biannual ‘German Week’ promotion, featuring traditional food products. While some customers praised items like Bavarian pretzels and apple strudel, others criticized the authenticity of certain products, such as ‘Potato Sticks’. Following this, the retailer announced broader expansion and pricing strategies. In the United Kingdom, Aldi announced a £900 million investment program, including plans to open 40 new stores in 2027 as part of a long-term goal to reach 1,500 locations. Meanwhile, Aldi US continues to grow its presence, with nearly 2,800 locations expected by the end of 2026. In Germany, an intensifying price war has emerged between discount retailers Aldi and Lidl, specifically targeting meat and processed meat products. Aldi has implemented permanent price reductions on over 20 items, such as various sausages and ham, with savings between 10 and 50 cents per pack. Some reductions, particularly for the Gut Drei Eichen brand, are regional. Lidl has responded by cutting prices on a comparable assortment of meat and sausage products by up to 13 percent, while offering an additional 10 percent discount to customers using the Lidl Plus app. This aggressive competition occurs despite low producer prices for pork, which remain at approximately 1.45 euros per kg due to high supply and sluggish demand. In addition to food competition, retailers are adjusting service models. Lidl has lowered its minimum purchase requirement for cash withdrawals at checkout to 99 cents and expanded accepted payment methods to include Visa and Mastercard. Simultaneously, Aldi Süd is promoting seasonal household items and electronics. the retailer Norma, which reduced the price of its ‘MY SMILE’ liverwurst by approximately 17%. These aggressive price cuts have drawn criticism from the Westphalian-Lippish Agricultural Association (WLV). WLV President Hubertus Beringmeier stated that the increased price pressure ‘threatens the existence of pig farmers,’ noting that pig farming businesses in Germany have already declined by over 40% in the last decade.
