Alentejo wine region sustainable packaging initiative

Overview

The Alentejo Regional Wine Commission (CVRA) has introduced the ‘Garrafa Leve’ (Lightweight Bottle), a 390-gram glass bottle developed in partnership with Verallia’s Portuguese subsidiary. The initiative aims to reduce environmental impact and production costs for the region's wine producers.

The new bottle is significantly lighter than the current market average of 550 grams and falls below the 420-gram threshold set by the Sustainable Wine Roundtable. CVRA estimates that if annual production reaches 50 million bottles, the project could save approximately 1,500 tonnes of glass and prevent 1,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Additionally, the CVRA expects the packaging to reduce production, logistics, and transport costs by roughly 2%.

While a lighter 310-gram model was considered during development, it was rejected by producers who believed it might negatively affect the perception of wine quality. The final 390-gram design remains compatible with high-speed bottling lines exceeding 10,000 bottles per hour.
