Aleph Alpha release of Kolibri AI model
Overview
Aleph Alpha, a Heidelberg-based AI company, has released Kolibri, a bilingual (German and English) language model designed for industrial, aviation, and public administration use. The model utilizes a mixture-of-experts architecture with 78 billion total parameters, activating approximately 3 billion to 3.46 billion parameters per token.
Kolibri is engineered for digital sovereignty, allowing users to run the model on controlled infrastructure to maintain data privacy and transparency. Developed in compliance with the EU AI Act, the model was trained using 768 B200 GPUs located in Germany and Finland. It features a context window of over one million tokens and is distributed under an Apache 2.0 open-source license via Hugging Face.
The release follows Aleph Alpha’s announced transatlantic merger with the Canadian firm Cohere, an acquisition aimed at developing sovereign AI for the finance, defense, and healthcare sectors.
