Alexandra “Alex” Eala, a 21-year-old tennis player from the Philippines, achieved a historic milestone at Wimbledon 2026 by becoming the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam in the Open Era. Her run included an upset victory over defending champion Iga Światek before she was defeated by Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16. Following this achievement, she received a Presidential Citation at Malacañang Palace from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Building on her breakout season, which included winning her first WTA 500 title in Washington and a WTA 125 title in Birmingham, Eala signed a major sponsorship deal with Marriott Bonvoy to serve as an ambassador for the ‘Tennis The World’ campaign in the Asia Pacific region, excluding China. Her rapid ascent has seen her climb into the world’s top 20 rankings. Following a successful North American hard-court season—highlighted by winning the Mubadala DC Open and deep runs at the Canadian and Cincinnati Opens—Eala reached a new career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 18. This milestone makes her the highest-ranked Southeast Asian woman in WTA singles history. Currently competing in the 2026 US Open as the 17th seed, Eala advanced to the third round before being defeated by Iva Jovic.
